January Presidency Message

The Scriptures Are the Word of God

The Lord uses action words to describe how we should study the scriptures.

Feast upon the words of Christ; for behold, the words of Christ will tell you all things what ye should do” 2 Nephi 32:3

“Neither take ye thought beforehand what ye shall say; but treasure up in your minds continually the words of life, and it shall be given you in the very hour that portion that shall be meted unto every man.” D&C 84:85

“I would that ye should remember to search them diligently, that ye may profit thereby” Mosiah 1:7

“And whoso would hearken unto the word of God, and would hold fast into it, they would never perish” 1 Nephi 15:24

How important is it that we diligently search and feast upon the scriptures, for they are the words of God?  Set a goal as a family to read the scriptures together daily.   By doing so, you can teach your children to treasure up the teaching of Jesus Christ and his prophets, and to hold fast to the principles and doctrines found there.

Julie B. Beck, as the first counselor in the Young Women General Presidency, said, “It would be impossible to learn the lessons the scriptures contain by reading them only one time through or studying selected verses in a class.”

When daily scripture study is accompanied with an invitation to the Holy Spirit, we can gain a testimony of the truthfulness of the scriptures.  Moroni promises just that:

“And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.

And by the power of the Holy Ghost, ye may know the truth of all things.”

I love the scriptures and the messages of hope, love, and peace found there.  I look to them for personal guidance and counsel.  This year, I, too, have recommitted myself to studying the scriptures daily and to increase my knowledge and testimony of the word of God.

Love,

Sister Erika Ostermiller

2011 Primary Theme

I Know the Scriptures Are True

The scriptures are the word of God.  As a primary presidency, we are prayerfully reading and teaching from the scriptures this year.  We will use the scriptures to help the children understand gospel principles, such as Heavenly Father’s plan, the mission of Christ, the role of prophets, the Restoration of the Church, and the blessings of the temple.  We hope that as we study the scriptures, the influence of the Holy Ghost will be present in Primary and that every Primary child will be able to say, “I know the scriptures are true.”
